The official 2020 Census counts for all U.S. cities aren’t in yet. But the estimates are, and they indicate that the Charleston demographics are shifting. The Charleston metro area population is estimated at just shy of 820,000, which is an increase of 1.8% over prior year estimates.
The three largest counties in the metro area are Charleston County, Berkeley County, and Dorchester County respectively. The metro area is growing by about 40 net new people each day, and over two-thirds of those (69%) are in the prime working ages of 18-54.

According to the Charleston County Economic Development Agency, population growth in the region has soared 20% over the past decade. The highest rates of growth have been experienced in Mount Pleasant (34%), North Charleston (18%), and Charleston (14%). The average age of Charleston County residents is 38, with 64% of the population being between 18 and 64 years old.
The Charleston metro area has experienced unprecedented economic diversification and business growth, with a mix of fast-growing startups and multinational corporations taking advantage of the region’s favorable business environment.
